As is our nature, we tend to ask hypothetical questions to stimulate conversation and ideas. Like what if JFK wasn’t assassinated, what if Germany beat us to the A-Bomb during WWII, what if John Lennon never got shot, and perhaps the most important hypothetical question that burns in our psyches — what would Metallica’s “Master Of Puppets” sound like with the horrible snare drum sound from their disastrous 2003 release “St. Anger?”
Well, the Internet has answered that last question by making it a reality. A YouTube user named data_dreams 2000 has taken the horrific snare drum from “St. Anger” — perhaps one of the worst albums released in the past 15 years — and inserted it into one of the band’s best songs, “Master of Puppets.”
The result is — interesting. It certainly proves that for music to be great, all of the elements need to fit. And listening to “Master of Puppets” with drums that sound like a toddler bashing on paint cans, I think we can all agree that whatever drummer Lars Ulrich was thinking during the recording of “St. Anger” was incredibly misguided and wrong.
