It may seem weird to kids these days, but there was a time when headphone mogul Dr. Dre was actually known for his music and not his over-priced ear buds. But with the bio flick “Straight Outta Compton” soon to be released — based on his days with legendary hip-hop group N.W.A. — it seems like Dre is coming out of his self-imposed music sabbatical (where I assume he sits on a mountain of money in a gigantic vault like Scrooge McDuck) to put together the soundtrack for the film. So, no it will not be his “Detox” album which he has been talking about releasing for about 15 years now — basically hip-hop’s answer to Guns N Roses’ “Chinese Democracy” in terms of waiting a ridiculous amount of time for an album.
According Consequence of Sound, his former N.W.A. bandmate Ice Cube says Dre is putting together the soundtrack that will feature new music from Eminem, Kendrick Lamar and new material from N.W.A., so it sounds like the album will be pretty sweet.
Rolling Stone says Dre will announce the album Saturday during his Beats 1 radio show The Pharmacy.
So hopefully we will get a new album from Dre, let’s just hope it doesn’t end up being a 15-year long wait. I mean, Dre hasn’t released an album since 1999 for crying out loud.
