In an era when people rarely bother to even purchase a single album, it seems like a lot of legacy acts are putting out mammoth box sets of material for some mysterious reason. From The Grateful Dead to Bob Dylan, these bands are putting out sets containing 20-80 discs of material — most of it unreleased. The price tags are usually pretty hefty, and the material is hit-and-miss, but these are goldmines for hardcore collectors. It is also probably a way for these acts to hold on to copyrights and so forth.
READ THE ALBUM REVISIT FOR PINK FLOYD’S “THE FINAL CUT”
It was announced Thursday that Pink Floyd, a band I was a manic collector of in high school (rare discs, bootlegs, ect.), will be releasing a trove of unreleased material from its pre-“Piper at the Gates of Dawn” recordings all the way up to “Meddle” (which, as a hardcore Floyd fan, I admit a lot of the stuff between “Piper” and “Meddle” can be hit-or-miss). It will include the long bootlegged Syd Barrett tracks “Vegetable Man” and “Scream Thy Last Scream,” as well as a mind boggling amount of material I didn’t even know about or was just vaguely aware of.
The collection, “Pink Floyd The Early Years 1965-1972” will contain 27 discs — 10 CDs, 8 Blu-ray Discs, 9 DVDs, 5 seven-inch vinyl singles and more — that would make 17 year old me salivating like mad. Now, while I am very interested in this collection, the $699.98 price tag is way out of my budget. Also, I have no idea where I would find the time to listen to all this. As a teenager, I had nothing but time to waste on this band. Now, not so much. It looks very, very cool though. Maybe someday I will be able to afford this beast of a collection.

If you do not have the time to wade through this sea of prog rock material, there will be a two disc collection of highlights. Though, for some reason, it doesn’t include the two Barrett tracks that a lot of fans want their hands on.
