Wolverine has always been the cranky misanthrope of Marvel comics. And for almost two decades, Hugh Jackman has played the character as such. Sure, the X-Men franchise has been hit and miss over the years, but say what you will about the films themselves, Jackman always played the character of Wolverine incredibly well.
But things are coming to an end, as Jackman will be hanging up the Adamantium claws after the third Wolverine film hits theaters next year. And based on the trailer for “Logan,” it looks like his swan song will be a movie with a much darker tone than we have seen thus far.
From the trailer, it looks like Logan is certainly older, beat up, scarred and bruised. Professor X is also in terrible shape, and it appears Logan is taking care of him. And from the narration, it seems mutants are now gone. Adding to the dark and misery we see on the screen, we hear Johnny Cash’s cover of Nine Inch Nails’ “Hurt.” All in all, it does not seem like an upbeat film by any means. But for a character like Wolverine, I think this tone works perfectly.
“Logan” will be in theaters March 2017.
