Before becoming the high-water mark of gritty comic book characters in both print and the silver screen, Batman in the 1960s was a more light hearted affair, full of of wild primary colors and a Robin who wasn’t brutally beaten to death by The Joker with a crowbar. Those simpler times had the Dark Knight fighting off rubber sharks with his Bat-Fists and Shark Repellent Bat-Spray. While campy as all hell, I still have a soft spot in my cold, jaded, snark-filled heart for this iteration of the Caped Crusader and his goofy sidekick.
Well, it looks like the mayor of Quahog on “Family Guy” — Adam West — and Burt Ward are returning to their iconic 1960s roles of Batman and Robin (in voice) in the upcoming animated film “Batman: Return of the Caped Crusaders.” Also returning from the 60s series will be Julie Newmar, who will voice Catwoman.
Let’s just hope they don’t go into “The Killing Joke” animated territory and have Robin and Catwoman engage in an unnecessary rooftop sex romp for no apparent reason.
The trailer literally has Batman and Robin trapped in a TV dinner, about to be cooked into oblivion, before they decided to talk about the new animated film, which will also feature The Joker, Penguin and The Riddler. Oh, and apparently some of it will take place in space.
“Batman: Return of the Caped Crusaders” will be released digitally Oct. 11 and released on Blu-Ray Nov. 1.
